Ghousi Shah

Ghousi Shah (Persian/Urdu:حضرت مولانا غوثى شاه) (1 July 1893 – 6 June 1954) was a Muslim Sufi saint and poet from Hyderabad, India. He was the Janesheen(successor) after MShah in the Sufi line.

Biography

Ghousi Shah was born on 1 July 1893 (16 Dhul Hijjah 1310 in the Hijri calendar) in Hyderabad, India. A Sunni Muslim, he followed the Hanafi school. He studied Urdu, Arabic and Persian attending the lectures of Maulana Hameed-Ullah. He also studied Fiqh, Hadith, and Tafseer for Islamic studies.

Previous line of successors

His predecessor, MShah, was a businessman from Mysore, India. After meeting Syed Sultan Mahmoodullah Shah Hussaini in Sikandarabad, he became his murid. MShah succeeded as the next Janesheen (successor) upon the death of the previous one.. Ghousi Shah was one year old when Syed Sultan Mahmoodullah died.

Legacy

In a speech delivered to the murids, Ghousi Shah publicly declared his son Moulana Sahvi Shah as his successor, stating that "this decision was in accordance with the will of God." The speech was given 4 years before his death.

Ghousi Shah also conferred spiritual succession Khilafath on four of his disciples with the help of his son: Mohammad Abdul Quadir Shah Saheb, Syed Khasim Shah Sahab, Sadullah Khan Sahab, and Abdur Rasheed Sahab. These details are inscribed on a stone at the dargah of Ghousi Shah.

Influence

Approximately ten thousand people followed him in India.

Maulana Abdus Samad, a student of Deoband, said: "I have not seen a greater interpreter of Masnavi Maulana Rum than Ghousi Shah."
Allama seemab Akabarabadi: He wrote, "How I only wish I had seen him from a distance."
Maulana Maudoodi: Maulana Maudoodi praised his learning after meeting him in the company of Nisar Yar Jung.
Allama Ashraf Ali Thanvi: Allama Ashraf Ali Thanvi gave tributes to his interpretation of determinism.
Syed Abdullah Shah: Syed Abdullah Shah said upon his death: "Once I went to listen to Hazrath Ghousi Shah Saheb’s sermon. He explained the intricacies of Tawheed quite coherently. Only a man of his caliber could do it. One has to wait for ages to expect such persons of distinction. Hazrath is no more. We must make the best use of the presence of Hazrath Sahvi Shah, his successor – a boon for all of us."
Nawaab Liaqat Jung: Nawaab Liaqat Jung said, "In fact, a movement of this type was founded by Hazrath Ghousi Shah, who organized a huge movement to inculcate religious values", while lauding the efforts of the Namaz committee in propagating the movement of Namaz.
Syed Badshah Hussaini Quadri: Hazrath Syed Badshah Hussaini Quadri also paid tributes to Ghousi Shah, stating that he dedicated his life to propagate Islam, Iman (faith), Tawheed (faith in the unity of God), Piety and Ihsan and that his books and teachings are still alive.

Death

Ghousi Shah died on 6 June 1954 in Hyderabad, corresponding to the 4th of Shawwal, 1373 hejire. He was buried in his father's mosque Masjid-E-Kareemullah Shah, 15-6-341, Begum bazaar, Hyderabad, India.

Urs

His annual Urs is organized by his successor Moulana Ghousavi Shah every year on 4th Shawwal. Moulana Ghousavi Shah (Secretary General: The Conference of World Religions and President: All India Muslim Conference) and other religious scholars preside over the function. The Urs celebrations end with sama (Qawwali Programme) at Baith-Un-Noor, Hyderabad.
